outhouse

GV II

Stables and coach house to Spring Lodge, now storage space.
Dated 1827 for WW (William Watson). One storey, 6-bay,
stables; 2 storey, 2-bay, coach house set back at right; wall
extends right from coachhouse to form enclosure in front of
outhouse, possibly pigsty and earth closet. Coursed squared
stone with ashlar dressings; roof of graduated Lakeland slate
with stone ridge and gable coping.
EXTERIOR: stables have 3 boarded doors with 4-pane overlights
under flat stone lintels, alternating with windows: first a
16-pane sash, others 3-pane top lights over 6-pane fixed
lights, all under flat stone lintels and with projecting stone
sills; right bay widest. Low-pitched hipped roof with low rear
right chimney. Left return has mounting steps at right of
double boarded doors under segmental arch with voussoirs, the
key inscribed WW 1827. Right return has side stone steps to
coach house. Coach house set back at right has second flight
of side steps to first-floor door; roof with gable copings;
right return double boarded doors under wide wood lintel, with
8-pane window above with flat stone lintel and projecting
stone sill.
INTERIOR: many original stall and manger fittings.
Wall to right is about 1.5 metres high with gabled coping and
breaks forward to form enclosure in front of one-strey, 2-bay
low outhouse with rubble walls and ashlar lintels, and
graduated slate roof. Pecked tapered piers south of this
building form entrance to rear drive.
A fine example of small country house stables.
