War Memorial. 1919. By Major C Oakley. For Barrow Haematite
Steel Co. Sculptors Fairburn and Hull; all of Barrow. Portland
limestone with iron railings and bronze plaques. Circular
platform with railings between 4 flights of steps having piers
and balustrades with bronze insets and guilloche ornament.
Central obelisk has plinth with convex corners and bronze
plaques; tapered square shaft with ornament of acanthus,
fluting etc and a bronze wreath on each side. The plaques bear
the dedication to, and names of, those lost in the Great War;
those at each corner with reliefs of infantryman, sailor,
Liberty and an angel. Attached to the railings are 2 plaques
with names of those lost in World War II. An imposing local
landmark.
