Mid Cl9. Brick. 3 storeys and attic, with late Cl9 shopfronts. Moulded wood
cornice. No 39 has tablet commemorating the fact that Thomas hardy worked here
as an architect's pupil 1856-62. No 40 has tablet inscribed "William Barnes
the Dorset poet lived here 1847-62".
