STOKE CLIMSLAND,
Barn and cowhouse on north-east side of farmyard at Middle Hampt

Barn and cowhouse. Dated 1852 with minor later alterations. Roughly coursed
slate-stone rubble with granite quoins; slate roofs, hipped to right end of
lower range. Two levels. Main range has four plank doors to ground floor, two to
left with wood lintels, two to right with semicircular heads to granite lintels.
Small window between two left doorways. External lateral steps to far left
lead to first-floor doorway. Large doorways with hipped slate hoods to left
and right of centre have date stone inscribed "WHN/1852" between 2-light window
with segmental wood lintel to right of left door has pigeon nesting holes
and ledges directly below eaves to right. Two single-storey rubblestone gabled
ranges projecting at right-angles to rear. Lower range set back to right
has elliptical-arched doorway with granite voussoirs and plank door to far
left and segmental-headed plank door with wedged voussoirs and projecting
keystone to centre. Centre doorway has small windows with granite lintels
to left and right, former with external lateral steps to left leading to plank
door on first floor. Another plank door directly above centre doorway.
Interior: Main range has continuous loft supported on chamfered cross beans.
Collar and tie-beam roof in three bays to left end: inspection of remainder of
roof structure not possible at time of resurvey (November 1987). Lower range
has collar-truss roof in five bays with half-bays to each end, collars reused,
possibly from jointed cruck blades. Included for group value.
