Description

TQ 2880 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER PICCADILLY W.1
80/122 (south side)
Devonshire House gates to
5.2.70 Green Park and gatepiers
(opposite to No 90
G.V. II* Piccadilly)
Gates and gate piers. Early C18. Very fine wrought iron ornamental gates and
Palladian gate piers of Portland stone. Double carriage gates between standards
and side gates, with ornamental overthrow, set between piers tooled with deeply
vermiculated rustication and with festooned friezes below cornice cappings, sur-
mounted by bronze sphinxes. The gates originate from Lord Heathfield's house at
Turnham Green. When the latter was demolished in 1837, they were bought by the
Duke of Devonshire for Chiswick House (Burlington Lane entrance), then, in 1897
removed to Devonshire House Piccadilly and to their present site on the demolition
of the latter in 1921.
