4/65 Statue of Hercules, 30
metres north east of
Place Farmhouse

G.V. II

Limestone statue of Hercules, 1578. Originally standing within the inner court
of Hawstead Place (demolished early C19), erected for the visit of Queen
Elizabeth I. Slightly over lifesize, naked but with a complete growth of fur
and a thick beard. In his right hand he holds a club over his shoulder, and
his left hand rests on his hip. He stands on a small cubical plinth on the
back of which is the inscription: "set up for Queen Elizabeth 1578, removed to
Hardwick 1827, severely damaged 1967, restored and returned home 1978". For
drawing dated 1812 of statue with original canopy, and for description, see
