7/190 Water tower to Lumbutts
Old Mill

Water tower to former cotton mill (now gone). Early C19. Hammer-dressed stone,
roof open but originally of cast iron. 98 ft. tower, rectangular on plan with
lateral chimney housing spiral staircase. 3 stage tower which steps back to
each stage has semi-circular arched doorways to each stage. Top stage has
square window (blocked) and is surmounted by heavy balustrade square in section.
To north is base of housing for vertical beam engine. The tower originally
housed 3 waterwheels fed from the top; these were replaced by a pelton-wheel
which has now gone. A striking industrial monument.
