Description

TL 85 NW WHEPSTEAD RECTORY ROAD

4/138 Riches Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse; late C16 with alterations of C17 and mid C19. 2 storeys, 3-cell
lobby-entrance plan. Timber-framed and rough-cast rendered. Slated roof with
axial and gable chimneys of red brick, rendered. Small-pane sliding sashes.
Pair of 3-panelled mid C19 entrance doors with architrave and small flat
canopy. Typical late C16 framing exposed internally; a wide unglazed window (now
blocked) in the room above the service end - this was possibly a cheese-loft.
The parlour probably rebuilt C17, and a 1-cell extension built against rear of
parlour/hall chimney, forming a T-plan. The eaves raised and a new lower-
pitched roof built c.1840.
