Early C17 small three-bay house later divided into two and extended behind. Timber
frame with wattle and daub filling. Front rendered with moulded cornice and
blocking course before clay tiled roof with brick chimney. Two storeys, three
windows, sashes on first floor, one with glazing bars. Ground floor late C19 and
modern shops.
Interior of No 21 shows baffle entry with large brick stack and stairs in original
position behind. Heavy chamfered beam with stepped tongued stops in central room.
visableframing includes posts, jowled at angles, plates and ties. Some external
framing visible in outshut.
Roof of claspedthrough - purlin type with principal rafters reduced above purlin.
Triple queen post trusses. Rafters halved at apex. Wind braces and longer diagonal
braces at corners. Good small Roman carpenters' marks on rafters, which continue above
No 23 although its other timber is concealed. Original thick plank floors.
