SJ 87 NE ALDERLEY EDGE C.P MACCLESFIELD ROAD
(North Side)

5/60 Croston Cottage.

II

House: 1847 with early C20 additions. Rendered brick on plinth with
Welsh slate roof and 4 plastered chimneys. Tudor Gothick style.
Originally L-shaped now square. 2-storey, 3-bay west front. Left end
bay has recessed 2-light windows with glazing bars and intersecting
tracery in the heads, the one above under a hood mould in a barge
boarded gable. Similar windows in right end bay which steps forward.
Central chamfered doorcase has 4-centred arched head above half-glazed
door. Above is 2-light window opening onto balcony above door, with
plain parapet. Tracery in windows on the sides.
Interior: Staircase has square balusters, mahogany handrail and
shaped open string. 2 original fireplaces with cast-iron grates, one
with engaged columns 4-panelled doors.

The best preserved of the early speculator's houses on the Edge.
