TL 72 NE CHURCH STREET, BOCKING

Five pairs of houses, 1872. Red brick with grey gault brick dressings. Red plain tile roofs, with crested ridge tiles. 2 storeys with 2 gables to each pair. Cusped and pierced bargeboards with ball pendants and wrought iron finials. 4 window range to each pair, of 2- and 3 -light iron casements with mullions and decorative glazing bars. Stone plaque to each gable, with sunk quatrefoil inscribed 'AD 1872'. Built for Samuel Courtauld as high quality housing in conjunction with his Bocking Weaving Mills. As such they form part of the C19 Courtauld development in north-central Essex, centred on Bocking and Halstead. (See D. of E. list for Parishes of Gosfield and Halstead Urban.)
