This is two houses in one. The back or east wing was built in 1593 by the Rev
John Frewin, the Puritan divine who was Rector of Northiam from 1582-1628 and the
founder of the Frewin family in Northiam. He occupied the house until his death
in 1628. This wing is a T-shaped timber-framed building, faced with weather-
boarding, partly grooved in imitation of masonry. Tiled roof. Gable ends north
and south. Casement windows with small square panes. Doorway with flat hood on
brackets. Two storeys. Four windows. The front or west wing was added by John
Frewin's great grandson, Captain Thomas Frewin, in the late C18 or early C19.
Two storeys and attic. Eight windows. Three pedimented dormers, the centre one
curved, the others triangular. Red brick. Stringcourse. Dentilled eaves
cornice. Tiled roof. Windows with glazing bars intact. Doorway with pilasters,
projecting cornice and door of eight fielded panels. The interior has late C16
or early C17 panelling and staircase.
