5379 (South Side)
No 40
TM 1644 NW 1/390
II GV

2.
Originally the western half of a very large C16 timber-framed house of which No
42 was the eastern half. It originally had a frontage similar to No 42 with double
jetties but was refronted in stucco in the early C19 with a parapet, and altered
later. 3 storeys. 4 window range, casements with moulded architrave. The ground
storey has a C20 shop front. Roof tiled. The roof is continuous with that of No
42, with a central chimney stack. At the rear there is a jettied range at right
angles to the front, with 2 bays at the south end of apparently later date. The
interior has high ceilings with exposed beams and joists with roll mouldings, (as
in No 42). There are also some sections of square Jacobean panelling. None of
the original structure can be seen at the front of the building.
