House, remains of, now used as store shed. Circa 1785 for Sir Richard Hill, second baronet of Hawkstone, for the use of his steward, George Downward. Now largely demolished with only a small part surviving.

Red sandstone ashlar; gable-fronted machine-tile roof with raised verges. Two storeys with flush floor band to front; two blind roundels to first floor and simple semi-circular arch with plain tympanum and imposts below; late C19 door flanked by blind mock gun-loops. Left long side has three C19 casements grouped together to centre, middle one in C18 opening with keystone; C19 casement directly below eaves to centre. Taller parallel gabled range to right also part of original Citadel but front gable has been entirely rebuilt in late C20 brick and it is not of special architectural interest.

The Citadel was built in the form of an 'ancient castle', based on that depicted in the Hill family coat-of-arms, but was largely demolished c.1824 to make way for the present Citadel (q.v.). Apart from the surviving fragment, the remainder was demolished c.1960. Included for group value.
