An interesting flint rubble building dating from the latter part of the C11
comprising a west tower, nave with north and south aisles and a chancel.
The west tower is C11, with bell openings with colonettes. The semi-circular
arch of the west door is entirely of Roman tiles with a single storey tympanum.
There is a later embattled parapet and the tower is surmounted by a slender
spire (Hertfordshire Spike). The nave also is Norman but there was considerable
restoration in the late C19 when the north aisle and south porch were rebuilt.
The south aisle is C13 and the clerestorey to the nave is C15. There are
C15 king posts among the modern timbering of the roof. The chancel is C13
and has 2 cusped lancet windows. There is also the remains of a C14 cycle
of wall paintings depicting episodes in the life of St Margaret, the martyr
of Antioch. The south arcade in the nave is early Cl9 and the north arcade
is early C14. The interior fittings include a fine 9 sided C15 pulpit, a
C15 chancel screen, 7 C15 benches, one pew front with a carved tiger holding
a paw on a mirror. The font cover is circa 1600 and the font is circa 1400.
There is also a brass of a knight circa 1415. The church forms the focal
point of a small picturesque village group. Graded for its architectural,
historical and topographical value. (RCHM 2).
