Terraced town houses. c.1776-88 as part of south east side of the Duke of
Manchester's development of the square on Portman Estate land. Brown
brick; concealed slate roofs. Nos. 1 and 2 of 5 storeys and No. 3 of 4
storeys, on basements. 3-window wide fronts. Square headed doorways to
left; panelled doors and rectangular fanlights in architrave cases, Nos. 1
and 2 with half pilasters and cornices. Recessed sashes, some with glazing
bars, under flat gauged arches. Stucco plat bands between storeys; stucco
cornices over 2nd floors. Parapets with stucco on stone copings. Cast
iron area railings with flambé torch or urn finials. L.C.C. plaques
recording residence of Sir Julius Benedict, composer, at No. 2, and of
J.H. Jackson, physician, at No. 3.
