Cottage ornee,former menagerie.1770s possibly by Hobcraft,with C19 and 1960s alterations.Timber-framed new rendered,three-cell plan.Originally two ground storey rooms with open bird room to south,made habitable and roofed in1960s.Hipped,plain tile roof with ridge stack and C20 front wall stack.One and a half storeys.East front:five bays.Central doorway with gabled porch with C19 Gothic bargeboards and finial,four-centred arch,and branch pattern decoration,probably originally late C18.To left, two C20 casements.To right,two similar windows.Above a gabled roof-dormer with barge-boards,finial,branch pattern decoration,and two-light casement.Garden front:three bays with large gabled central loggia with C19 Gothic bargeboards and finial,and trio of late C18 Gothic pointed arches with slender quatrefoil shafts with capitals and bases.Above in the gable,a single glazing bar sash with square frame.Inside the loggia,a trio of pointed arch sashes with Gothic glazing.To either side of the loggia,single C20 tripartite windows with glazing bars.North and south elevations have similar ground storey windows and similar roof dormers to the east front.Interior:late C18 chimneypiece and doorcase in central room.Contemporary straight staircase.Hobcraft was the designer of the 1780s Gothic Chapel in Audley End House.
