Country house, 1892, by C.E. Ponting for W.L. Lysley. Cattybrook
red brick and Ham Hill stone dressings, plain tile hipped and
gabled roofs and prominent moulded brick stacks. Two storeys and
attic, mixed C17 detail with ovolo-moulded mullion windows.
Asymmetric entrance front with hipped roof, large east stack and
projecting gable to right with off-centre ashlar 2-storey porch
bay. Main gable has attic 5-light and large 5 x 3-light mullion-
and-transom leaded stair light to right of porch. Porch has
shaped gable, narrow upper 4-light and ornate entry with Ionic
pilasters, segmental arch, keystone and shell pediment.
Bolection-moulded inner doorcase. To left, paired pedimented 4-
light timber dormers, 2, 3 and 2-light upper windows and 2-light
ground floor windows each side of large canted 1-3-1-light mullion-
and-transom canted bay. Paired gabled service range to left. To
right, wing gabled to west with north moulded stack. Moulded
ashlar string continues around whole building. South front is
near-symmetrical with gables each side of centre, left gable
differently fenestrated to right. Centre 2-4-2-light timber
dormer with segmental pediment, mullion windows to first floor and
large off-centre 2-5-2-light mullioned and transomed canted bay.
Service wing to right has paired gables and further gable-ended
range to right. West end has large shaped gable at end of north
front with off-centre 2-storey bay. Interior generally in mid to
later C17 style with open well stair. Stained glass Lysley arms
and monogram in stair windows.
Design exhibited Royal Academy 1892. Illustrated Builder, 18.6
and 23.7.1892. Original drawings in the house.
