ST 97 SE CALNE WITHOUT STUDLEY LANE

Farmhouse, late C18 altered early C19, rubble stone with stone
slate roof, ashlar east end and ridge stacks, brick west end stack.
Two storeys, 4-window range. Three first floor 16-pane sashes with
timber lintels and one 9-pane sash. Centre date plaque 1875.
Ground floor left canted 8-12-8-pane timber bay window, blocked
window, C19 ashlar gabled porch, French windows, blocked window and
16-pane sash. North-west projecting wing, former cheese-room and
dairy with casements and evidence of alterations. Date plaque
refers to ownership of Earl of Crewe to whom the Studley House
estate passed from the Hungerford family. Farmhouse adjoins site
of Studley House recorded as owned by Norborne family in 1611 and
Hungerfords from late C17, burnt down c1800.
