TQ 53 NW SPELDHURST GROOMBRIDGE HILL (east side)
OLD GROOMBRIDGE
7/514 Stone Cottages
GV II

Row of 5 cottages, originally 6. Probably 1840s. Chisel-dressed local
sandstone ashlar brought to course except the attic storey, which is Flemish
bond brick; slate roof; stacks with brick shafts.

Plan: West facing range, originally symmetrical, each cottage one-room wide
and 2-rooms deep with back-to-back fireplaces in 3 axial stacks. Doorways to
Nos 1 and 6 at the extreme left and right, the other doors were paired, to
left and right of centre. Nos 2 and 3 have been converted to one cottage,
blocking the door to the original No 2.

Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Gable-ended roof. Originally symmetrical 6-
window front with a stone platband at first floor level and a brick platband
at attic floor level. Chimney shafts with corbelled brick cornices; ground
and first floor openings with stone ashlar voussoirs. Recessed plank front
doors; 2-light timber casement windows to the ground floor; similar glazing to
the small first floor windows, which are arranged in pairs. The gabled attic
dormers are slate-hung on the returns with deep eaves with pierced curly
bargeboards and are glazed with C19 small-pane timber casements. C20 single-
storey lean-to porch addition on the right (south) return.

Interior: Not inspected.
