Hall house incorporated in, and now part of, shop. Probably mid C16 altered, with
early C20 extensions. C16 section timber-framed with rendered wattle and daub infill,
on rubblestone plinth, the framing mostly replaced by brick on ground floor of east
side and opened up on ground floor of west side (into later extension). Additions,
of brick, rendered and with applied timber on High Street elevation. Plain tile roofs.
2 storeys. the C16 part is of 2 bays, gable end to High Street, and forms the
north-east section of the property which, on high Street side, has 2 gabled bays with
late C19 shop front to ground floor and to 5-light bay windows above. The east wall
of the C16 section has later door, large panelling and one arched tension brace (at
left) on 1st floor and a window to left bay set below eaves plate, and probably in
original position. Interior of C16 part: exposed timbers. Rear bay has inserted
floor and stair with battened board door and strap hinges to cupboard underneath. On
1st floor, front wall has cambered tie-beam with roll-moulded arris (mostly cut away)
and a reverse-curved arch brace from wall-post to tie-beam; central tie-beam has
mortices in soffit from former partition wall. In roof, central and rear trusses
have several posts up to collars with wattle and daub infill, front truss has one
remaining broad queen strut; clasped through purlins, principal rafters of central
truss reducing in size above purlin and bridled at apex, other rafters halved (some
reduced); wind braces; all timbers in rear bay sooted. Early C20 extension ranges to
front and west (left) side not of special interest.
