GV II*

Guest house or gate house of Shrewsbury Abbey, later used as
part of timber yard. Late C13. Coursed and squared red
sandstone extended in brick with plain tiled roof. 2 storeys,
3-bay plan, with 2 gable walls and part of side walls of
original structure surviving. Gable walls each have remains of
chamfered arched window. North elevation largely as rebuilt to
serve wood yard, with inserted double doors and workshop
windows on each floor, and loading door at upper level.
Lower added wing projecting from this elevation is built
against the single surviving wall of another abbey structure.
This is a continuation of the west wall of the main building,
buttressed, and with traces of the springing for a vaulted
ceiling towards the west. This west wall may incorporate an
earlier precinct wall, and may represent an original
watergate.
