Rear range to Lowfield Junior and
Infant Schools

Junior and infant school. 1877, with additions 1878, and C20
alterations. By Innocent & Brown. For the Sheffield School
Board. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and gabled and
hipped slate roofs with 2 ridge stacks with double
lozenge-shaped flues linked by ventilators. Gothic Revival
style.
Plinth, coped gables, gabled roof ventilators. Single storey;
17 window range. Off-centre main gable has a pointed arched
recess containing a graduated triple lancet. To left, a range
with 4 shouldered windows. To right, a range with 3 gabled
through-eaves dormers with shouldered single lights, and two
2-light shouldered windows with mullions. To right again, a
hipped wing, L-plan, with 7 lancets with impost band. In the
return angle, to left, a pointed arched doorway.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This school is one of a number designed by Innocent & Brown
for the Sheffield School Board, and is amongst the earliest to
be built after the 1870 Education Act.
