Former house with warehouse attached to rear (derelict at time of inspection,
August, 1989). House probably early C18 remodelled in C19, the warehouse
early C19. Coursed rubble (where visible) mostly rendered; slate gable end
roofs (some stone, some Welsh slate); a little brick patching. 3 storeys.
The house faces Marlborough Street and has been truncated, probably by one
window bay, possibly in the C19; the warehouse faces the waterfront, its
main elevation almost flush with the end wall of the house, the function
obscured by render. Exterior: house with only 2 window openings to 1st and
2nd floor (are to each floor) original but blocked with slightly projecting
stone surrounds. Waterfront elevation: house end wall with central external
stack with stone shaft; one window to each floor (raised surrounds, sashes
with glazing bars) and another between ground and 1st floor marking position
of original stairs. Warehouse: regular 5-window range with loading bay;
several sashes survive, planked doors to loading bays; raised surrounds throughout.
External stairs to 1st floor, extreme right. Interior: house largely remodelled
in C19 but an early C18 wooden cornice with cyma mouldings survives at ground
floor level; this feature cuts across one corner of the room to accommodate
a winder stair adjacent to the stack (the stairs have gone but the curved
shell is visible throughout all 3 storeys). C19 staircase set within warehouse.
Warehouse floor supported by tapering wooden columns of circular section.
Recent stone fireplace with bolection moulding, much defaced, 2nd floor end
wall. This building occupies a prominent site close to the harbour and
makes a major contribution to this part of the townscape.
