Description

NORTH HILL
SX 27 NE
4/100 South Battens
II
House. Probably mid C18. Stone rubble, slate hung with rag slates on front
elevation. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Brick shafts to end stack on right and
rendered stone rubble and brick shaft to end stack on left. Brick shafts to lateral
stacks on rear.
Plan: The original arrangement is uncertain and the house has been divided into two
houses. The front range has a double depth plan, entrance to left of centre with
smaller room on left and larger room on right, both heated by end stacks. There is a
stair to rear of the passage with small room to rear left heated by rear lateral
stack and larger kitchen to rear right sharing the end stack with the room on front
right. To rear left a small one or possibly 2-room plan wing heated by a side
lateral stack. This wing is probably a later C18 extension.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front with entrance to left of centre.
C19 or C20 gabled stone rubble porch with plank door flanked by remains of C19 20-
pane sash to left and two early and late C19 16-pane sashes to right. First floor
with C19 20-pane sash and 16-pane sash flanking a later C19 or C20 16-pane sash.
Lean-to outshut on right.
Interior: Large granite lintel to fireplace in right hand room. C19 stair to rear of
passage. Partition on left hand side of passage removed; there is a stone rubble
cross wall on right hand side of passage. First floor and wing to rear left not
inspected.
