GV II

House, divided into two cottages. Circa C15 or early C16; remodelled in circa 1700.
Timber-framed with plastered inifing and brick plinth. Plain tile roof with gabled ends and
raised eaves. Brick axial stack with rebuilt top. PLAN: Four timber-frame bays. Originally one
house, the centre two bays probably an open hall, the left [west] bay possibly the low end of

inserted into the hall and the eaves were raised in about 1700. The house is now divided into
two dwellings, Tudor Cottage occupying the west bay of the hall and the putative low end, and
The Cottage having the right [east] bay of the hall and the easternmost bay. Adjoining east is
the listed timber-framed house, item 9/78. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and attic, asymmetrical
6-window range south front; various circa C20 1, 2 and 3-light casements, the attic windows
enlarged and with small gables; C20 plank doors with simple C20 wooden porches. Exposed
small-framing with square panels and original wall-plate under the raised eaves. At rear
timber-framing also exposed and various casements, but no gables. INTERIOR of Tudor
Cottage: Cruck trusses to right-hand bay, the right-hand hall truss has cambered collar with
peg-holes for arched braces. The cruck blades have trenches for purlins. Inserted floor in former
hall has axial ceiling beams with ogee stops and exposed joists. SOURCE: Tonkin, J.W.,
