Description

POUGHILL
SS 80 NW
6/202
- Penhay Farmhouse
- II

Farmhouse. Probably C16 core, mid and late C17 improvements, C19 and C20
modernisations. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C19
and C20 brick; slate roof (formerly thatch). Altered 3-room-and-through-passage
plan house facing south with inner room at right (east) end. Projecting end stacks
to service and inner rooms and projecting rear lateral stack to hall. 2 storeys.
Irregular 5 window front comprising a variety of late C19 and C20 casements, some
of latter iron-framed and all with glazing bars. C20 fixed pane window with leaded
panes slightly left of centre blocks former front passage door. Present C20 door
immediately to left to service room. Gable-ended roof. Interior shows mostly C19
and C20 plaster which probably hides earlier features. All fireplaces are blocked.
Hall has early C17 ovolo-moulded and scroll-stopped crossbeam and inner room has
mid-C17 chamfered and bar-scroll stopped axial beam. Cob crosswall at lower side
of former passage and service room has 2 crossbeams, the ends of which are either
unstopped or with runout or straight cut stops - late C17. Roof has been mostly
replaced in late C19-early C20 but early C17 A-frame truss with pegged dovetail,
lap-jointed collar between hall and inner room and a late C17 A-frame with plain
pegged lap-jonted collar over service room. Sooted truss said to have been removed
from hall.
