Description

WASHFORD PYNE LOWER BLACK DOG
SS 80 NW
6/282 Middleway
-
GV II

House, former blacksmith's house. Mid C17 with C19 addition. Plastered cob on
rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatched roof. Now a
3-room plan house facing north. The left (eastern) room is a C19 addition. It has
an end stack. Central room has axial stack in former end wall. It is not clear
whether small right end room was heated by now-blocked fireplace in end wall, now
party wall with adjoining house. 2 storeys. Irregular front of 3 variously-sized
late C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars to ground floor and C19 horizontal-
sliding sash first. C20 door left of centre but probably a door originally situated
at right (west) end. Gable-ended roof. Rear elevation includes another C19
horizontal-sliding sash with some original crown glass panes on first floor.
Interior: central room shows C17 features; rubble fireplace with soffit-chamfered
and straight cut stopped crossbeam, and, at west end, an oak alternate plank screen
with bead-moulded edges. Small west end room possibly included blocked fireplace in
end wall. Apparently original A-frame roof is only partly accessible.
