Boarding house for Uppingham School, formerly preparatory school. 1868, probably by
Charles Barry, junior. Of coursed squared rubble with ironstone banding and ashlar
dressings, Welsh slate roof patterned with bands of fishscale tiling and with
ornamental ridge tiles. Coped gables. Moulded stone ridge and end stacks. Gothic
Revival. Two storeys and attics. Asymmetrical composition of main block with
2 stepped wings to rear, progressively lower. Garden front dominated by gabled
projection with 2-storey canted bay window with Gothic tracery. East front has
similar bay to left. Entrance at chamfered north-east corner, articulated by steep
pyramidal roof with finials. Arched entrance carried on granite columns with
shaft-rings. Two-light rectangular oriel window above, with tracery and parapet.
Three gables around base of roof, with 2-light traceried windows and finials.
Buttresses with set-offs at angles. Lower wings to rear have plainer windows and
decorative chimney vents at ridge. C20 extension beyond. Built for Mr Hodgkinson, a
master from Uppingham School, as a preparatory school, and formerly known as
Springfield.
