MONTACUTE CP
THE BOROUGH (north side, off)
Walls enclosing south car park, about 150 m south of Montacute House

GV
II
Walls enclosing former nursery, now part of car park. Probably C19. Mostly Ham stone rubble, about 3 metres high with thin coping.

West wall extends northwards from No.1 The Borough (q.v) with an inserted three-centred arch of the main drive, and on an angle opposite The Lodge (q.v) a gateway with moulded cambered arched doorway, set in hollowed rectangular recess, with boarded and studded gate: short return northwards has a blocked elliptical arch, then the slightly higher wall is brick lined along the north and east walls, probably for growing fruit trees; in the north-east corner a small building with simple window, having pyramidal Welsh slate roof behind parapet, the eaves being at the same height as the lower east wall: south wall has a row of stones set upright on top as coping, part of the east length may be C20 work: a later C20 break in north wall, with plain near ashlar piers, gives access to the main car park. Parts, at least, of this walling may be of earlier date, a plot resembling this area indicated on a rough survey map of 1782

(Girouard, M and others, Montacute House, National Trust, 1985).
