Description

ST 96 NE CALNE WITHOUT DEVIZES ROAD, Sandy Lane
(west side)

5/74 Nos 19 to 21 (consec)

GV II

Pair of houses, mid C18 with third added early C19, ironstone
rubble with thatched roofs. The original pair, Nos 19 and 20, has
end stacks and 2-storey, 5-window front of ironstone pointed in
white lime, ashlar quoins and red brick dentilled eaves cornice.
The 5 bays are linked vertically by unusual parti-coloured window
jambs, rusticated in ashlar alternating with render, originally red
brick. Ground floor triple casements alternating with doors,
casements renewed, rusticated jambs and rendered lintels with
ashlar wedge keystones. Outer window lintels have curved top,
centre lintel is altered. Thin ashlar string course above,
rustication continued over, framing 12-pane windows over doors,
triple casements to left and centre and paired 12-pane windows to
right, probably the only originals. Rendered lintels with ashlar
wedge keys and end voussoirs. No 21 is 2-storey, 2-window with
end stack and ashlar quoins. Leaded casement windows in ashlar-
framed cambered-head surrounds, pairs above, triple casement below
and door. Doors to all 3 houses in C20 gabled timber porches. A
building is marked on the site on J. Powell 1763 map.
