and attached railings

GV II

Offices. Dated 1902. Red brick, terracotta details, roof not
visible, cast-iron basement railings.
3 storeys and basement, added attic storey, 2 identical blocks
of 3 bays of 3:1:3 windows. Each has steps up to central
entrance with segmental arch in moulded architrave, small
3-light window and plaque over. Flanking and upper-floor
windows in architraves, eared to 1st floor. Pilasters to each
end and between the 2 blocks rise to bracketed eaves cornice
with central panels with raised lettering: '1902 THR/JRR'.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Basement railings: Art Nouveau style scrolled panels between
plain rails.
HISTORICAL NOTE: in Robinson's Directory for 1903/4 the
building is first entered as Nos 6 & 7, York Place Buildings
and accommodated the Automatic Hot Air Feed Fire Grate
Company, manufacturers of straw hats, linings, clothing and
mantles, a woollen manufacturer, a furrier, a woollen and
trimming merchant, a tailor and a manufacturers' agent. This
is in contrast to the use of York Place Buildings almost
entirely as woollen warehouses on the 1886 Insurance map.
