GV II

House. Early C17 and early C19. Timber-framed and rendered,
with front of white Gault brick and roofs of plain tiles;
brick end stacks. Complex plan form of 2 parallel ranges with
two blocks at right-angles to rear.
EXTERIOR: the main, south, elevation of 2 storeys; 3-window
range; plain parapet and hipped plain tile roof. The 1st floor
has a small-paned tripartite sash window either side of a
small-paned sash, all with rubbed brick ?flat arches. The
ground floor has a central open-pedimented doorcase with
dentils, consoles and moulded architraves; semi-circular
fanlight with Gothick glazing bars and door of 6
raised-and-fielded panels. Either side are bay windows with
small panes, cornices and frieze of loops and diamonds. On the
flanks are pilasters with moulded capitals and panels of
lattice and quatrefoils (as interior of No.2 London Road
(qv)). The west elevation is rendered with a brick flank stack
to front range and a long timber-framed parapet with moulded
timber cornice to front range and a long timber-framed parapet
with moulded timber cornice linking the disparate roofs. This
elevation has 2 tripartite sash windows with central vertical
glazing bar on 1st floor, and a mixture of C20 windows. The
east flank has similar red brick stack, parapet and cornice
and a C20 conservatory. One 12-pane sash on 1st floor and C20
small-paned casement windows on both floors.
The east rear wing has a hipped roof, C20 small-paned casement
windows, and is black weatherboarded on its exposed flank wall
at 1st floor level. The western rear wing is gabled with a
lean-to extension with peg tiles on north end and further
attached gabled single-storey extension on north-west corner.
On the north-east corner is a single-storey C20 extension with
hipped plain tile roof. The rear parallel range roof has a
large ridgeline stack.
INTERIOR: the early C19 front range has much period detail and
a dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters, fret cut
tread ends, column newel and swept hardwood handrail. Doors
have 4 raised-and-fielded panels and moulded architraves, and
one front room has fire surround with eared architrave and


moulded plaster cornice. Hall cornice of egg-and-dart.
The timber-framed part consists of a 2-bay cross-wing of c1600
at the north-west corner of the building. This has jowled
posts and a 4-bay roof with butt purlins and central couple
with curved wind braces to purlins. North gable has remnants
of 5-light diamond-mullioned windows. Wall bracing is
'inverted' and one door opening can be traced in central
1st-floor partition. Door to attic is C17 of moulded panels. A
stack on the east flank has a wide inglenook fireplace with
chamfered timber mantel beam. Above this on the 1st floor is a
4-centred-arched fireplace with chamfered jambs, all of
1600-20.
The rear parallel range consists of 2 bays of early C17
timber-framing with chamfered spine beams and bridging joists
and a clasped-purlin roof. This is possibly the hall range for
the cross-wing, but looks a little later.
A large good quality red-brick garden wall bounds the
north-western part of the garden, linked to the north-west
corner of the house.
