Pair of semi-detached houses. Mid C19. Painted stucco, slate
roof with moulded stacks to front of centre ridge and gable
ends. Double-depth H-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 4-window range of 1:2:1
fenestration with projecting open-pedimented end bays.
Gabled outer ranges step forward with plinths and moulded
first-floor string courses which are flanked by banded
clasping pilasters. Eaves cornices to the returns form
capitals to the pilasters and open pediments to the fronts;
small plaster wreaths to the apexes are over 3/3-pane sash
windows with bracketed sills to eared and shouldered
architraves to the first-floor windows, no moulded architraves
to similar ground-floor windows. 2/2-pane sash windows to the
inner ranges.
Entrances with semicircular fanlights in the returns are under
large recessed semicircular-arched panels.
No.25 to the left has a C20 door; No.26 to the right is in two
parts with one entrance inserted against the party wall under
a lean-to slate porch on brackets, probably late C19, and a
late C19 half-glazed gabled porch to the return.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Devon Square was the centre of the development carried out for
the Courtenays c1840-60 to the designs of JW Rowell.
