Substantial house, now youth centre, and attached wall. Early
C19. South and east walls of grey Gault brick and north and
west walls of red brick. Slate hipped roof well behind plain
parapets. 3 storeys with large C20 extensions to east
partially covering east elevation.
EXTERIOR: the symmetrical south front to the garden has, on
the 2nd floor, 4 square 12-pane sashes and a central
semicircular-arched window with radiating glazing bars and 2
Gothic lights recessed within a further arch. All openings
have rubbed brick arches. The 1st floor has 4 deeper 16-pane
sashes and central semicircular-arched pair of doors, recessed
within further arch and with margin glazing and fanlight over.
Ground floor has central projecting Greek Doric portico with
flat roof, cornice, entablature with triglyphs, and a pair of
columns either side of a wide central opening. The columns and
respond pilasters are fluted for two-thirds of length. Portico
stands on elevated Portland stone paved platform with 3 stone
steps and blocks to the sides with recessed rectangular
panels. Double doors with rectangular fanlight over with
semicircular motif and radiating glazing bars. Large stacks on
each flank wall.
The east (entrance) elevation has, on the 2nd floor three
12-pane square sash windows and one blind recess. The 1st
floor has 3 deeper 12-pane windows and one blind recess.
Off-centre doorcase on ground floor with strongly projecting
hood with panelled soffit on console brackets and with
semicircular fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Reeded
surround with capitals and suspended capitals on plain
flanking pilasters. The reveals are panelled. 3 sash windows
also on ground floor of 16 big panes.
The north elevation has, on the 2nd floor, two 12-pane square
sashes, one blind recess and a near central 12-pane sash in
partly blocked recessed panel. The 1st floor has two 16-pane
sashes, one blind recess and a similar window within arched
recess. The ground floor has one 12-pane sash, one blind
recess, one 20-pane within recess and blocked door with
radiating fanlight in recess. 2 large Gault stacks on this
face of roof.
The west elevation has, on 2nd floor, one 12-pane square sash,
2 blind recesses and a C20 metal casement. The 1st floor has
one 16-pane sash, a blocked window opening, one blind recess
and two C20 windows. The ground floor has 2
semicircular-headed door openings with Gault brick keystones
and imposts, one with radial fanlight and door of 4 glazed
panels over 2 flush. The other opening has C20 glass infill.
Also, one 16-pane sash, one blind recess and one C20 4-light
horizontal window.
INTERIOR: broad central corridor leading from south portico,
to square vestibule on cross-axis of similar hall to entrance
front door. The vestibule has blind arcade of elliptical
arches on capitals with doors having reeded surrounds and
square leaf-form motif at corners. Glazed screen on south side
of vestibule with elliptical arch with radiating glazing bars.
Two large southern ground-floor rooms have elaborate plaster
cornices and marble fireplace. Main stair has been much
altered but windows, now blocked on each landing. Two service
stairs, one with boarded panelling up to handrail and tight
dogleg plan form with 'cage' of stick balusters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: L-plan red brick wall in English Garden
Wall bond attached to north-west corner, enclosing yard to
west and linking with west boundary wall. This has a
pointed-arched gate opening and an oval window with
cross-pattern glazing bars in its north-projecting part, and
ramped coping on the return part.
