The Forge

GV II


Purpose-built forge. Dated 1914 on lintel above door but possibly reusing older timbers from a barn opposite on the street elevation. Vernacular revival style. Timberframed, with frame exposed to front with brick infill to ground floor and pargetted plaster above. Other elevations are clad in weatherboarding. Tiled roof with brick chimney projecting through roof slope. Gable-fronted with carved weatherboarding and upper part projecting on brackets. Gable has 4 curved tension braces and square framing above. Incised decoration of two lizards to top of gable. Central Dutch door flanked by large windows with leaded lights. Interior has brick forge with iron hood. Walls are covered but softwood roof with tie beams, angled queenstruts and collar beams. At time of inspection still a working forge and notable as an early example of conservation architecture.
