CHITTLEHAMPTON THE SQUARE

1/156 Water Pump

GV II

Water pump. Late C19. Water pump with a cast-iron housing in the form of
a tall pedestal, square on plan and slightly tapered with a moulded base
and cornice with a weathered pyramidal cap surmounted by a globe-shape
finial with ribs. Under the cornice a wavey frieze and moulded panels
on each side of the pedestal. The south side has a fluted water spout
with a bucket lug. The east and west sides have small human marks
formed from acanthus leaves and the east side has a large curved pump
handle.
At the base of the east and west sides there are inscription plates, that
on the west side is broken, but the plate on the east side is complete
and bears the insription "Garton and Jarvis Manufrs Exeter".
The pump stands on a low-stepped plinth of pitched stones situated on
the south side of The Square.
