Description

BARNET
TQ2588 TEMPLE FORTUNE HILL
31-0/26/10229 (North side)
Hampstead Garden Suburb
Nos.13 AND 15

GV II

Artisans' cottages. 1908-9. Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Painted pebbledash over brick plinth in Flemish bond. Swept eaves to roof of tile, with exposed rafter ends; gable kneelers of tile flats. Two storeys and four-window range, the rectangular shape relieved by the introduction of central, gable-facing half dormer, with cheek eaves returns; the pair of square lights to outer ranges enlarged to fill this centre range, with weatherings drawing a firm line across the face of the gable restoring the horizontal emphasis of the composition. Casements to ground floor in 3-4-4-3 rhythm, and the whole elevation bilaterally symmetrical. Axial ridge stacks on party wall, and axials stacks to peaks of gable ends. Forms a group with Nos. 1-25 (odd) and 2-36 (even) Temple Fortune Hill, an important part of the original artisans' quarter as planned by Unwin. As with Asmuns Hill, the emphasis is on the production of a coherent streetscape composed of distinct types.
