Description

BARNET
TQ2587
HEATH CLOSE, Hampstead Garden Suburb 31-0/28/10179
South East side)Nos.2-10 (Even) and attached wood railings

GV II
Includes: NO.49 HAMPSTEAD WAY Hampstead Garden Suburb. Houses. 1911. Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Brick in Flemish bond. Half hipped roofs of tile with swept and boxed eaves. Two storeys with hipped dormers and three storeys to gable-facing insets and gable ends. Block articulated into a series of projecting hipped bays, essentially a variation of the extended double-ended hall house plan with forms and finishes indebted to vernacular architecture. Despite the apparent variety, the design is in fact bilaterally symmetrical; a centre, or hall range of sixteen-window range, the third and fourteenth ranges have a gap in the roof, framed by a pair of stacks; at first floor a two-bay Tuscan loggia with railings of an original design enclosing a porch; coved cornice ties each loggia to eaves; below two round-arched passages to rear garden. Each projecting crosswing of six windows, arranged in pairs, with dormer in centre. Entrances
to Nos. 2 and 8 set in outer corners of long hall block, in a corner porch topped by a tent roof, which has overtones of Regency period design that pick up on the vaguely
"Chippendale" chinoisserie of the porch railings noted below. Entrances to Nos. 4 and 6 set in outer corners of six-bay Tuscan loggia. All openings are flat arched except for those noted above. All windows with leaded light casements of original design set in mullion and transom frames which are stained and varnished; windows either two or three light.
Axial ridge stack at centre line on party wall between Nos. 4 and 6. First-floor windows and loggias with entablature band weathering. Entrance to No.10 on return under bracket porch; above a half dormer with half-hipped facing gable and an external stack to one side. Also included is garden wall which links No.49 Hampstead Way to the group and which has a round-arched opening. NO.49 Hampstead Way is included for its group value. Near mirror image of Nos. 1-9 Heath Close (odd; q.v.) with No.51 Hampstead Way. Both sides of Heath Close form a group with the entrance to Waterlow Court (q.v.).
