Walls, piers, steps, gates and railings. Early C18. Coursed squared sandstone walls
with ashlar coping; ashlar piers: stone steps; wrought iron gates, gatepiers and
railings.
Retaining wall to garden in front of house has projecting coping and supports tall
spearhead railings. Central flight of steps, the lowest swept, to high gates, with
dog-bars and scrolled half-rail below further intermediate bar; central panel with
leafy urn shape. Elaborate overthrow with broad scrolled band holding central
monogram roundel; scrolled cresting raised at centre, with similar roundel and vane,
and at ends above square wrought-iron piers with similar ornament. Scrolled spandrel
panels between these piers and the railings.
Each section of wall has central pilasters supporting decorative iron panel; left and
right ends of wall rise into square, corniced stone piers.
At left, adjacent to wall, 2 tall, square stone piers with pulvinated rustication
have wide cornices and ball finials.
