Description

TQ 53 NW SPELDHURST THE GREEN (east side), LANGTON
GREEN
7/487 Lampington Cottage

GV II

Small house. Probably early/mid C19, possibly earlier origins, some later C19
and C20 modernisations. Ground floor level is Flemish bond brick with
decorative burnt headers with centre part of main front patched with stretcher
bond red brick. Timber-framing above is hung with peg-tile. Brick stacks and
chimneyshafts. Peg-tile roof.

Plan: House faces west. Main block has a 2-room plan, each room with a
projecting end stack. Service rooms to rear under a parallel roof which
extends a little further to left (north) where eaves carried down over the
entrance porch which is set back from the front. The brick patching in the
middle of the main front may be evidence that that was originally the position
of the front doorway. Other service blocks further back set at right angles
to the front block. One of these is set north of the main service block with
gable-end onto The Green. It has a garage but the first floor level is
connected to the main service range.

House is 2 storeys.

Exterior: Regular 2-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars and
similar windows around the rest of the house. Main roof is gable-ended.
Present front doorway on left end contains a C20 panelled door. Further back
and to left C20 garage doors under a range of first floor windows which has a
canted bay in the angle between garage and main service range.

Interior: Was not available for inspection at the time of this survey.

Lampington Cottage is one of an attractive and varied group of buildings along
the east side of The Green.
