House. Mid C18 with alterations. Coursed squared sandstone with large quoins
and tooled ashlar dressings; roof of small graduated Lakeland slates, with
stone gable copings on moulded kneelers and yellow brick chimneys. 2 storeys,
3 windows. Central renewed 6-panel door in stone architrave; plain sashes,
some with old glass, have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills;
window to right of door restored after removal of C19 shop window. End chimneys.
Right return has first-floor blocked loft opening. Rear has full-width outshut
under catslide roof.
Interior: stair removed and new stair inserted in outshut; first-floor windows
have panelled C18 shutters; fielded panelling in first-floor right room is wall
of stair from rear of house to loft; lower steps lift on hinge for access to
space below. Rear has basement at left on lower ground level, with old floor
joists visible, and stone-flagged floor. From this 3 shallow steps in curved
recess lead to blocked door formerly giving access to Chare Top Cottage (q.v.).
Wide floor boards throughout.
C20 rear addition not of interest.
