House, originally with a shop, latterly 2 dwellings. Late C15, stack and
floor inserted, part of upper storey rebuilt and reroofed early C17, altered
C19. Timber frame, plastered. Thatched roof. 4 bays, originally a 2 bay
open hall without a cross passage; storeyed end bays, jettied upper end with a
shop and passage below solar. 2 storeys. Jettied upper gable end to road
originally had an entrance to left and 2 arched shop windows to right replaced
by a 3-light glazing bar casement; large curved brackets to alternate joists,
some removed, first floor 3-light casement. Left return originally had no
entrance, a later lobby entrance to right of centre with a boarded recessed
door, 2 and 3-light glazing bar casements, 2 first floor restored 3-light
diamond mullioned windows, ridge stack in hall upper bay, rebuilt cap. Right
return has a C19 lean-to and a brick oven outshut towards front, both
pantiled; original entrance at lower end of hall blocked, a door into service
bay, 3-light casements, restored 3 and 4-light diamond mullioned windows, a 3-
light box dormer. To rear a 3-light casement and a half hip. Interior: close
studding, 2 service door heads, in hall inserted stop chamfered axial binding
beams and fireplace bressumer, domical brick oven. Former shop has original
segmental pointed arched door head to front with jointed spandrel pieces, pegs
for 2 arched window heads, C17 bar stop chamfered cross axial binding beam on
jowled storey posts. Newel stair in front of stack. Solar rebuilt with
reverse curved arched braces and studding of smaller scantling. Original open
truss posts have rebated sections, a reused raised tie beam on cruck-like
pieces, reverse curved arched braces in lower closed truss with a square crown
post, arched braces in walling at lower end, collars clasp purlins in C17
roof.
