Description


The following building shall be added:

2/258 Former barn 30 metres
to S.W. of Hardrigg Hall

GV II


Byre, formerly threshing barn. Possibly C16 in part; later
additions and alterations. Square, coursed rubble;straight joists
suggest original building may have had open side to west. Roof
has stone flags to lower courses of each pitch, remainder is
slate; stone ridges. Single storey, 6 bays. Opposed cart
entrances in third bay (from N.) now filled in. Small plank door
in 2nd bay, large cart entrance inserted in S. gable. 5 full,
oak-pegged cruck trusses originally with spurs, collars and
blades lapped over saddles. Carpenters marks visible on some.
Trusses 1 and 5 re-used, nos. 2 and 3 are constructed of light
scantling and have notches cut out; nos. 1,4 and 5 have
additional splays. Only no 2 retains original collar intact,
those to nos.3 and 4 are cut through whilst 1 retains replacement
collar intact and 5 has had replacement cut through. Corrugated
iron shed added to E. side.
