Terraced "first rate" corner town house. 1823-25 by John Goldicutt, a
more substantial house than the same architect's No. 98. Entirely
stuccoed with slate roof. 4 storeys and basement. 4 windows wide
with 3 window wide full height bow. Long 5 bay return. Entrance in
right hand bay, panelled door with side lights and cornice head
surmounted by square lay light, the whole framed by Ionic engaged
columns with panelled dosserets flanking panelled frieze. Channelled
ground floor with recessed sashes. Upper floors have architraved sash
and casement windows, those on 2nd floor with cornices and the window
above doorway with cornice on consoles. Plat bands and sill bands;
main entablature over 2nd floor continuous with that of No. 98,
pilasters between top floor windows and crowning cornice with blocking
course and guard rail. Geometric pattern cast iron balcony across 1st
floor. Spear head and lotus finialed area railings. Similar details
to return with canted bay to east end. Interior retains some
Goldicutt Grecian details in cornices etc. otherwise late C.l9
details. Residence of the philanthropist (Sir) Moses Montefiore,
1826-85.
