Milestone. Probably C19, modified. Concrete pillar, two cast iron plaques.
Pillar trapezoid on plan, 600mm down to 200mm, 300mm thick: the plaques
mounted on the angled sides, about 350mm wide x 300mm high, the tops
shouldered and segmental, the bottoms a double cyma-recta curve, reading,
on west 'Ilchester 5' and on east 'Ilminster 7'. This road turnpiked by
the llchester Trust in 1753 (Bentley, J. B and Murless B.J, Somerset Roads, Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society, 1985).
