11/244 Selwyn monument in churchyard
about 7.5m north of north porch,
Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

GV II

Chest tomb; Samuel Selwyn, mid C18; stone. Flat lid, moulded
edge; quarter-square gadrooned bulbous corner balusters. Long
sides main section flanked by narrow panels. In top of centre a
head with wings, flowers to pendant rings in corners, below a
flower, and rococo scrolls framing panel. Main part of panel
curved back at edges to give relief to carving. Flanking panels
pendant ring at top, flowers below. Ends rococo surround to
panel, edges curved back to give relief to carving. Initial
inscription a little worn, date illegible; later inscriptions,
some on lid, latest date 1817. A fine mid C18 monument. Near
another Selwyn monument, (q.v.).
