The prison was built in 1853 (John Hayward, Archt) on the site of a "Bridewell"
erected in 1810, of which the central heavily rusticated and vermiculated stone
gateway remains. This was the work of George Moneypenny, Archt, and was suggested
by the side doors at Burlington House, London.
