House, now subdivided into 2 shops with office suites above.
Early C17, with C18 refronting and rear range, C19 shopfronts.
Orange brick front and rear range, Flemish bond, with
timber-framed structure plastered and pebbledashed right
(west) flank and part of rear range. Old tiled roofs, front
with moulded wood bracket-modillioned eaves cornice.
PLAN: 6-bay front range, with position of front entrance
obscured by shopfronts, but probably central. Rear stair
turret corresponds with second bay from west, with later
extension across the remainder of the rear to give a
double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics, above basement. First-floor
front elevation has 6 slightly recessed 12-pane sash windows
with architrave surrounds beneath rubbed brick arches, the
tops of which are covered by the base of the moulded eaves
cornice.
Ground floor has 3 early C19 shopfronts, No.6 being double
fronted. At left a closed window with 6 large panes with a
panelled Tuscan Doric pilaster surround, a slim fascia, and a
moulded cornice raised on blocks above capitals; doorway above
shallow steps, in second bay a three-quarter glazed door with
2 lower flush panels, with a pilaster surround and cornice of
similar detail to the window. In centre is a projecting bay
with moulded glazing bars and colonnettes at corners, above a
brick stallriser with a panel of terracotta guilloche moulded
ornament, and with fascia and flat moulded cornice above.
Second doorway in 3rd bay from right, 2 shallow stone steps.
C20 glazed door in slim pilaster surround with projecting flat
moulded cornice hood on cut console brackets. At right is a
third shop window, a projecting bay of generally similar
detail to that in the centre. Blind boxes above all 3 windows
set above moulded plat band at first-floor level.
Rear elevation has a mid C18 rear range at left, part red
brick, Flemish bond with overburnt headers, part stuccoed,
with canted 2-storey bay with triple sash windows 8:16:8 pane.
Fascia and bold modillioned cornice above, plaster spandrel
above ground-floor window, to right recessed 12-pane sash
window and rear door on ground floor with 6-pane fanlight.
Door below now fixed with C20 hopper window inserted.
At far left (east) single storey timber-framed and

weatherboarded outshut with pantiled roof. Right of centre is
2-storey projecting brick stair turret, with plat band at
first-floor level, wood casement window on first floor;
12-pane sash window on ground floor, both below segmental
rubbed arches. At far right is timber-framed pebbledashed rear
projection, coved wood cornice below hipped roof, C20 casement
window on first floor, and projecting C19 flat roofed bay with
6 panelled rear door and coupled 8-pane sash windows to right.
To roof 3 hipped casement dormers, with bold moulded wood
cornices. Hipped and gabled roofs of varied heights at rear
with modillioned eaves cornice and parapet at left (east); red
brick chimneys, 3 flue stack at left (east) on ridge of rear
range, clustered square chimneys of varied size at right
(west) of projecting stair turret, with fragment of
quatrefoil-pattern moulded brickshaft of earlier C17 chimney
at base; in central valley between the front and rear range is
an early C17 chimney with brick octagonal shafts, one with
honeycomb pattern roll mouldings, with panels between now
rendered.
INTERIOR: ground floor plan much altered by opening out for
shops and by subdivision of property. Entrance to No.4 through
former window reveal with trace of C18 cornice above. Rear
room with canted bay has fine Edwardian Arts and Crafts
fireplace and wood surround. Vaulted cellar below rear, red
brick, English bond lining, brick arched storage compartments,
4 centred brick arch inside threshold which has a substantial
door frame.
Ground floor of No.6 has fireplace with eared architrave, wall
with panelling and dado and bold double cyma wood cornice;
arched entry (now blocked) to rear hall and staircase,
elliptical head with keyblock and twin panelled pilasters.
Window in west wall with quadrant bars. Cased beams running
from front to back appear to indicate the position of a wall,
now removed, defining the entry corridor from the front.
First floor now accessible from rear right (west) vestibule.
Open string dogleg stair with bracketed treads, square newels,
barleysugar twist on urn balusters, and bold moulded handrail,
dado with raised and fielded panels and simple moulded rails.
First floor front range has 3 rooms, each of 2 bays, with a
central fireplace at the rear (now central) wall. 2 doors,
lead off the first floor landing. West room panelled, with
moulded dado, moulded wood cornice, fireplace with bolection
moulded inner surround, shelf on consoles, raised panel, with
bolection and cyma surround, on chimneybreast. Centre room
with C20 access corridor blocking off its fireplace which has
a bolection moulded raised panel on the chimneybreast, and is
flanked to left by a panelled dado and wall, with a bolection
moulded dado rail. End room (east) has a bolection moulded

fire surround with Edwardian cast-iron grate and blue glazed
tiled inner surround and hearth, and moulded dado rail.
Attics have exposed principal rafters and butt purlins, C20
ceiling raised above collar level, halved and pegged rafters
with much renewal, studwork in west gable. Rear attic has
access from top landing which was adapted to fit it, roof
structure above has ridge board.
