Chest tomb approx 31m north of
vestry door of Church of All Saints

GV II

Chest tomb. 1774. White Portland stone with black marble slab.
Elaborate chest tomb in mid C18 style. Deep black marble slab
with bold bolection moulded edge, raised fielded panels on 4
sides, flanked by Tuscan brick capitals and pilasters, with
raised carved putti heads, basket mouldings, and scotia
moulded bases, heavy cyma recta and quadrant moulded base and
plinth. Raised surround, formerly enclosed by iron palisade
railings. Incised top slab in memory of John Benson (d.1774
aet 14), Sarah Benson (d.1776 age 12), Mary Benson (d.1778 aet
50), John William Benson (d.1801 aet 70), panels inscribed to
other family members to 1864, panel on north side records that
stone to be maintained in perpetuity by Trustees of Green Coat
School. Slab to vault laid 1850 by permission of Vicar.
